Since the Iron Grays is a reenacting group, the acquisition of uniform, gear, and arms is a primary requirement for full membership in the organization. One of the core reasons that people reenact is to collect items that relate to the Civil War era. In the case of reenacting, this is focused on items that can be actually worn or used.

The Iron Grays has the basic philosophy that high quality begets high quality. If members collect high quality from the very beginning or make it a personal goal, then we all have the foundation of top-notch authencity for the group as a whole. For this reason, the IG is looking for the reenators who have the desire to do better and constantly improve.

The IG also welcomes non-participant or auxillary members who are genealogists, researchers, or simply curious about the period or the hobby. One of the IG's missions is to educate the public about Southern soldiers, shedding some light on a piece of Civil War history.
